Population Dynamics Test

Online Review

I've noted exactly what you should focus on for this test.  Please recognize that, in addition to being responsible for defining terms you will also be expected to identify examples in context and use the models that we've created to draw conclusions.  Anything on this review page that you find confusing should be considered an indication of what you need to study.
         -Mr. S.

Basic Concepts:
  • All populations change over time.
  • How and why do populations change over time
  • Understand limiting factors such as:
    • Resource availability
    • Predator/Prey Interaction
    • Reproductive Success
  • Understand how the following terms fit into the current unit of study:
    • carrying capacity
    • immigration
    • emigration
    • birth rate
    • death rate

Can you explain why the exponential growth from the graph above is not sustainable?  What factors contribute to the change in the population that is observed when the exponential growth phase ends?

Can you explain when the predator and prey populations do not rise and fall together?  What is the reason for the "off-set" nature of the pattern?

In general, what population must remain higher for this relationship to be sustainable?  Predator or prey?

HHMI Population Dynamics
Click on the HHMI Population Dynamics and explore logistic and exponential growth curves.  You can click the arrows to get to the graphs.  Pay special attention to the slope (click "show") of the lines and how they change over time.  Can you figure out what letter/variable is used to represent carrying capacity?
Population Ecology
Click "launch interactive" and observe the interactions between the populations over the course of the seasons.  Pay special attention to the impact that some of the populations have on others.
Food Chain Game
Food, and other resources, are a density DEPENDENT factor that limits population size/growth.  You can play this game about food chains for fun.
Rabbits & Plant Competition Simulation
There are many factors that influence populations.  The effect of competition between weed species and grass species on rabbit population is looked at in this simulation.  See if you can figure out what conditions are most beneficial to the rabbit population.
